The Tonight Show was originally presented by the father of the talk shows Steve Allen, but was later replaced by some other presenters, of which the best known, and important in the history of the program (and also that of American television in general) was Johnny Carson, who maintained his conducts continuously for 30 years (from 1962 to 1992) before retiring.
The current season is the fifty-fourth, in fact The Tonight Show is the third longest entertainment program in the history of American television after the soap opera Sentieri (Guiding Light) and Hallmark Hall of Fame. In 2002, TV Guide magazine ranked The Tonight Show in 12th place among the best 50 TV shows of all time.
