ROMA - Prima c'era solo il segno della pace: una stretta di mano con i vicini, in chiesa, alla domenica. Ora sta prendendo piede anche un contatto più laico e caloroso: l'abbraccio per strada tra sconosciuti. L'iniziativa, "Free Hugs Campain" è stata lanciata nel 2004 ma il vero e proprio boom è arrivato nel 2006 grazie a un video che su Youtube è stato visto da più di 5 milioni di persone. La campagna è un esempio di quanto possa fare un semplice atto di gentilezza, realizzato da qualcuno con il solo obiettivo di far sentire gli altri meglio. Senza nessun altro fine che quello di regalare un"contatto".

Il video è stato messo su YouTube il 22 settembre scorso: ad oggi è stato visto da 5.402.795 persone. Quello originale è stato registrato per le strade di Sydney. L'interprete, identificato con lo pseudonimo di Juan Mann, cammina attraverso Pitt Street Mall con un cartello con la scritta "Hugs Free". La musica del video è dei Sick Puppies, un gruppo australiano.

Pian piano, l'iniziativa di Juan supera la diffidenza della gente rivelando il piacere delle persone di sentirsi abbracciate: e non rimane isolata. Alcuni uomini e donne si associano a Juan e lo aiutano a distribuire gli abbracci. Dopo un po' di tempo la polizia impone di bloccare l'iniziativa dato che Mann non ha l'assicurazione di responsabilità civile necessaria per l'attività. Mann e i suoi "soci" iniziano allora una petizione che raggiunge le 10mila firme: a questo punto le autorità se ne vanno non prima di essere abbracciate.
