[aiuto] computer (di un amico) impallato a morte

quest'amico ha un portatile (con dati da salvare) che non parte neanche in modalità provvisoria (win 98).
secondo voi, a collegarci un HD esterno e installando su quest'ultimo un altra versione di w98 si riesce a farlo partire (facendogli considerare il disco C come "secondario")?
altrimenti come salvare i dati da questo PC?
